Motorsport Ireland Young Racing driver of the year Jonny McMullan has said he “can’t wait” to compete in his new car for the first time in the All Ireland Formula Ford 1600 Championship this weekend.
McMullan will drive the Bernard Dolan-prepared Formula Ford 1600 Van Diemen provided by Motorsport Ireland, as part of his prize for winning the Dunlop Sexton Trophy.
The first round of the All Ireland Formula Ford 1600 Championship takes places Kirkistown, Co Down. McMullan will also drive in the National Formula Ford Championship in the UK.
Under the watchful eyes of Bernard Dolan and Sexton trophy mentor, Mick Merrigan, both the team and driver are very excited about the season ahead and challenging for honours both in Ireland and the UK.
Speaking during testing this week, Jonny said: “I am eagerly anticipating the season ahead and can’t wait for the first start. It is an exciting prospect to race in a car that is completely new to me but I am confident that with Bernard Dolan and the team backing me, we will have the car set up right to compete with the best out there. After that it will then be up to me to challenge for wins and championships.”
With support from Dunlop, the Irish Sports Council and Motorsport Ireland last year’s Young Racing Driver of the Year looks well set to do exactly that.
In addition to his assault on the championships, McMullan is aiming to take home some silverware at the trophy races including the Vivion Daly Formula Ford Festival, Leinster Trophy, Martin Donnelly Trophy, Walter Hayes Trophy at Silverstone and the Formula Ford Festival at Brands Hatch.
