Ashbourne’s Jack Newman enjoyed a trouble free run to 12th overall and 4th in class.
Having been plagued with a number of issues on his last outing, Jack and his team had stripped the Escort right down and traced the problem to an errant ECU. Having sorted the issue, they were looking forward to a strong performance in the Circuit of Munster, round 4 of the Triton Showers National Rally Championship.
With the car running well, it soon became apparent that tyre choice would be a major issue, as the heavens opened unexpectedly before the first stage. The first loop went well, as the crew got used once again to the Escort’s 280bhp, this time running cleanly. Happy with their tyre choice, they decided to stick with it on the second loop of three stages. As the stages dried, however, temperatures rose and it became apparent the tyre compound was too soft, as the tyres overheated and lost grip.
Jack was much happier with the third and final loop, and visibly delighted that the car was running well once again.
Jack Newman: “I am delighted that we have traced and cured the issue- the car is flying once again. As I said before, I can only hope we have used up all of our bad luck now and it is onwards and upwards from here. I think I could have pushed harder and was probably braking a bit early today but it was all about getting the car to the finish and we certainly did that. I definitely need some more seat time!”
Next event for Jack Newman and navigator Andrew Browne is the Raven’s Rock Rally on June 28th, after which the team will compete in their local event, the ALMC Stages Rally.
