Big Field of Supercars set to contest Mondello Park Rallycross
It’s just days until Ireland’s Rallycross Stars take on the best the UK has to offer as the MSA British Rallycross Championship, in association with the Shannon Group, returns to Mondello Park.
The Kildare Motor Club event will feature the biggest and most modern field of Rallycross Supercars seen at Mondello Park for more than a decade. The British Championship contenders will be joined by the Irish series regulars to create a field of more than a dozen drivers who will battle it out over two separate events, Round 4 on Saturday June 27th and Round 5 on Sunday June 28th.
Leading the invasion will be UK based Irishman Ollie O’Donovan in his brand new 4WD Fiesta Supercar alongside three other similar Ford machines driven by Julian Godfrey, Andy Grant and Kevin Procter. Adding variety to the field will be the Mitsubishi Lancer Evo of Steve Hill, a pair of Peugeot 208’s for Andy Scott and Mark Flaherty and a sole Citroen Xsara for regular Irish visitor ‘Mad’ Mark Watson. The Irish Challenge will include two more Fiestas, driven by Thomas O’Rafferty and Declan Kelly , Noel Greene with his Mitsubishi Evo and the return of the ex Christopher Evans Vauxhall Astra in the hands of new owner Geoffrey Dolan.
More than twenty Super National Cars are expected to challenge for two wheel drive honours. Despite their lack of all wheel drive the Super National Cars are not far behind the Supercars in terms of performance and a varied field, which includes everything from a Lotus Exige to a Ford Ka, should provide some of the weekends best entertainment.
The supporting cast is led by the spectacular RX150 Buggies where the visitors will be joined by local Rallying Superstar and British Rally Champion Daniel McKenna, alongside RTE Sports presenter John Kenny. A large grid of identical cars will contest the Suzuki Swift one make series, with Retro Rallycross, Swift Junior, Hot Hatch and Stockhatch Cars all on the bill.
Tickets for both days are now on sale on the Mondello Park web site at advance booking discounts. Rallycross fans can follow the build up to the Return of the British Rallycross Championship on the Mondello Park web site www.mondellopark.ie or on social media using #mondellorx.
