Team BMR RCIB Insurance driver Árón Smith is ready to bounce back to the front in Rockingham this weekend after a disappointing performance at Knockhill last time out. Struggling for pace throughout the weekend, Smith left Scotland knowing that the venue least suited to the larger Volkswagen CC was now out of the way.
Rockingham has been kind to the Irishman in previous years, having made his first visit to the Corby circuit in 2007. Making his Rockingham podium debut in 2011, Smith went on to challenge for the Clio Cup title later that year. Just one year later, Smith was now a fully fledged British Touring Car driver and leading his first laps in the S2000 specification Ford Focus in horrendous weather conditions and would eventually finish the race a credible fifth overall.
In 2014, Smith showed that both he and the Volkswagen CC could be a competitive package around the speedway, setting the fastest lap during the final race of the weekend. With the highly developed Volkswagen CC proving that with Smith at the helm, several podiums have already been achieved so far this year, and now Árón will be aiming to add to that tally and give his championship position a boost going into the final three weekends of the year.
Árón Smith – #40 Team BMR RCIB Insurance:
“Rockingham is a pretty unique venue that’s for sure! But I’ve had some really good times there, podiums in the Clios and leading my first BTCC race. Knockhill was a tough old weekend for us, but thats how this championship works, everyone has their share of bad weekends and that was ours, hopefully that’s it now and we can get the rub of the green from here on in at circuits that should suit the Volkswagen and that are favourites of mine personally.”
