Rathoath’s Cian Carey travelled to Brands Hatch in Kent last weekend to compete in the UK Monoposto Series.
Driving his Mooretown Engineering 2.0 Formula Renault, the Motorsport Ireland Young Driver of the Year nominee qualified on pole position for the opening race. Having carved a reputation as something of a “rainmaster” this year, the Meathman rubber stamped this with a dominant performance in qualifying. Not only did Cian claim pole, but the gap back to his fastest competitor was an incredible 1.6 seconds, and would have been even more had a red flag stoppage not discounted an even faster lap from the Irishman!
Conditions remained wet for the race and Cian lined up his Mooretown Engineering backed Formula Renault on pole position, confident he would take his first win at the historic venue. True to from, he nailed a perfect start and immediately pulled out a gap, lapping over 1.5 seconds a lap quicker than the rest. Not even a mid race safety car intervention, which bunched up the field, could stop him, and he crossed the line eighteen seconds ahead of the second place man to take a hugely impressive win.
Similar conditions and a second pole position for race two meant that Cian was confident of doing the double but unfortunately fate was to deal a cruel blow as a fuel pump failure meant he had to retire from the race early on.
“I’m really happy with that weekend. I knew once the rain came that we could beat the F3 cars and I was right. The non finish in the second race is disappointing but to be honest it is overshadowed by the win in race one.It was a great weekend and to win at Brands is just fantastic. Thanks to my dad and all the Mooretown team- they did a super job as ever and I couldn’t do this without them.”
