BID ON RACE WIN SUIT WORN BY MOTORSPORT LEGEND ZANARDI
Italian driver Alex Zanardi has enjoyed plenty of success throughout his motor racing career. He’s also suffered personally as he battled for wins and championships on the racing tracks of the world. In 2001 Alex had his legs amputated as a result of an IndyCar crash.
Despite that trauma his determination has resulted in further success in the ultra-competitive world of international motorsport. This CharityStars auction is for the race suit that Alex wore when he won the Race of the Czech Republic in the 2009 World Touring Car Championship in Brno.
Alex has also competed in handcycling, and he finished fourth in the handcycle division of the 2007 New York Marathon. That spurred him on to race even more and he’s since won the Rome City Marathon and the Venice Marathon.
Perhaps Alex’s greatest success was to win two gold medals in the 2012 Paralympic Games in London. By coincidence, the road time trial and the individual road race, in which he won his gold medals, were both held at the legendary motor racing circuit Brands Hatch.
All of this came after Alex’s Formula 1 career, which included stints with Lotus and Williams, and his United States-based IndyCar career, in which he won the title on two occasions. Some of his individual races on the way to his American titles in 1997 and 1998 have gone down in history as amongst the best-ever performances behind the wheel of a racing car.
This auction is hosted on CharityStars.com, and proceeds will go to ASEOP. Founded in Modena in 1988, the charity aims to enhance the quality of life for young patients with cancer and their families. Its work is now extending overseas.
