Reigning Irish Touring Car Production Champion Grzegorz Kalinecki and his Sportchip.ie team moved one step closer to clinching the Irish Touring Car Championship when the Teng Tools supported series returned to Mondello Park last weekend.
Having once again qualified on pole position, Grzegorz Kalinecki was content to let the fast starting pairing of Shane Rabbitt and Rob Savage take the lead in the early stages. The Sportchip Golf displaced Rabbitt’s Mazda RX-7 on the main straight before closing down Savage’s rapid Honda Integra. After a close battle, the Golf eased ahead and as we have come to expect in 2016, began to ease away to take yet another win and maintain his unbeaten record in 2016.
In race two, it was more of the same, as the Turboman.ie backed driver worked his way towards the front, the grid, as ever, having being reversed after race one. Unfortunately, just as Kalinecki took the lead, a massive shunt just behind, involving Eddie Kinirons’ M3 and Savage’s Integra, brought out the red flags. With the barriers sustaining some damage, the decision was taken to declare the race null and void.
With just four more races, at two Mondello race meetings, to run in the 2016 series, Sportchip.ie are in a strong position to win their second championship in as many years, having clinched the ITCC Production Championship in 2015.
Grzegorz Kalinecki, Sportchip.ie “It was a good weekend for us once again. The car performed superbly and everything went to plan. It was a shame about race two, but I wish both drivers all the best and hope to see them back out on the grid soon.”
