Cian Carey, 22, clinched the 2016 BOSS Ireland title at the high profile Leinster Trophy meeting at Mondello Park.
The double Motorsport Ireland Young Driver nominee has set the pace for most of the races in the high powered series all season, despite competing again some far more powerful machinery in his 2.0 Formula Renault-Tattus. Having won at Kirkistown and Mondello Park already this season, the Rathoath driver approached the final round at Mondello Park, at the biggest race meeting of the year, just needing a pair of points finishes to clinch the coveted title.
With some extremely powerful machines, including an F1 powered Gould, Cian was happy to qualify ahead of the horde of fellow Formula Renault drivers in sixth overall for the first race of the weekend.
Unfortunately it was all to go wrong for the champion elect as the pack headed down towards turn one fr the first time. Contact with another car sent the Mooretown Engineering backed machine spinning off the circuit. A superb recovery drive, from 24th place, saw Cian scythe thorough the field, however to take an impressive sixth at the flag- setting him up to clinch the title in the Leinster Trophy race the following day.
In front of a capacity crowd, Carey knew exactly what he had to do and made a conscious decision to make a cautious start from fifth on the grid, initially dropping to eighth. After this though he uncorked an amazing charge, relieving Barry Rabbitt of third overall mid race and then matching the pace of the two F3 mounted drivers until the flag to take third overall in the big race and of course the 2016 BOSS Ireland title too.
Cian Carey, 2016 BOSS Ireland Champion: “I’m delighted to win the title, there was tough competition this year and we learnt a lot. The team and car have been superb all year and I would like to thank my sponsors Mooretown Engineering, Frank Brazil Reinforcements and McEntee Financial Services, as well as Motorsport.ie for their support all year. To take third overall in a Formula Renault in what is arguably the biggest race of the year at the same time is the icing on the cake. Looking at the laptimes aftewards I can’t help but think what might have been, but I am still delighted with the result!”
