Marmaris Rally of Turkey

After an eight-year absence from the FIA World Rally Championship, Turkey made its comeback to the series last weekend in spectacular style. It’s been some time since the WRC last featured such rough conditions and the result was a drama-packed three days in the mountains in the Marmaris region on the Mediterranean coast.
Our first day of recce, when we picked up a puncture ourselves, provided an eloquent glimpse of the ordeal the crews and cars were about to face and, as expected, it turned out to be a rally of attrition. Estonia’s Ott Tanak and his co-driver Martin Jarveoja successfully picked their way through the chaos, however, to claim the top prize, aided by their Toyota which they were swift to describe as “fantastic”.
This picture of a relatively tight right-hander was taken on the second pass on Day 1. The stages effectively cut up very quickly, with big ruts adding to the challenge of sharp stones and extremely fine sand. This punishing cocktail ended up sidelining Thierry Neuville and Nicolas Gilsoul with suspension damage the next day.
