Ireland’s Jordan Dempsey claimed a convincing victory in the final of the major end-of-season Formula Ford race, the Walter Hayes Trophy event at Silverstone yesterday.
Dempsey (19), from Mullingar, who won the Young Racing Driver of the Year Award in 2017, won his heat and came through to take his semi-final in an amazing finish where he jumped from third place to first in the closing seconds, beating runner-up Rory Smith by 14 thousandths of a second.
That was enough to give him pole position for the final, and he took the lead from the green light, only for the race to be stopped when several cars tangled. From the restart, Dempsey again led the field away, and he was never headed, going on to a clear win by 5.3 seconds, with the next four cars covered by less than a second, including Jonathan Browne, from Ratoath, Co Meath, in third position.
Cork teenager Lucca Allen yesterday took eighth place in the final of the Formula 4 Cup at the FIA Motorsport Games at the Vallelunga circuit in Italy. Keith Dempsey, from Ashbourne, Co Meath, finished sixth in his semi-final of the GT Digital Cup.
At Mondello Park, the LOH Motorsport team of Dan Polley, Ronan McHale and Patrick O’Dwyer led for most of the distance to win the annual Six Hour Endurance Race for Fiesta Zetecs. Two other teams finished on the same lap as the winners, with Swipe Right Racing 50 seconds behind, and Team MMR less than a quarter of a second farther behind in a dash to the chequered flag.
