Report from Melanie Derflinger – T Sport Bernau
The digital truck racing season came to an end last weekend after completing 8 virtual races on circuits originally scheduled for the 2020 FIA European Truck Racing Championship. The organisers, the team and especially Antonio Albacete and his son and digital racing trainer Tony invested a lot of time into this new championship to keep the truck racing community engaged and entertained while the real-life racing was put on hold. It was a new experience and challenge which Antonio excellently mastered by finishing the virtual racing season with a podium finish at the final race on his home circuit Jarama!
Within a very short time, the “ETRC Digital Racing Challenge” was set up with the actual 2020 team liveries. For the past couple of weeks, full-season entrants and drivers with special permission have been competing against each other at the virtual racing world, engaging thousands of fans with exciting racing action. All races were streamed live on Facebook and YouTube, as well as broadcast in 5 languages on a number of channels across Europe. On average 129,000 fans have been watching each one of the races. If you missed any of these races, you can still watch them on the FIA ETRC – European Truck Racing Championship YouTube channel!
Antonio truly impressed his fans and all of us with his performance in the virtual racing world. His qualifying lap times and race results were very consistent throughout and even though he missed one event, he finished the eRacing season with a fantastic and well-deserved podium at the ultimate race and a 4th place in the overall standings! Well done Antonio! Let´s see what we can achieve next week at the long-expected, on-track opening round at Autodrom Most in the Czech Republic! Stay tuned!
