Kevin Coyne will take on the biggest challenge of his career this weekend when he races at the world-famous Silverstone track in Northamptonshire.
The 18-year-old Farranfore-based racer is contesting the HEL Performance British Junior Supersport Championship, the first Kerry rider to commit to the series.
Riders race on 200cc to 500cc production machines and Coyne fields a self-prepared Kawasaki with help from JOG Tuning in Gortatlea.
He initially planned on entering the opening two rounds of the series for 18 to 22-year-olds but has now decided to complete the season.
As well as this weekend’s Silverstone event he will also race at Oulton Park (September 19-20); make a return to Donington Park (October 2-4 the venue for his UK debut in July) and Brands Hatch (October 16-18).
“It is amazing to think we are going be racing at Silverstone, the home of the British Grand Prix and to think, a lad, his dad and van from Farranfore will be racing where all those Formula One drivers and MotoGP riders have raced in the past,” his father Mark said.
The team’s extended UK programme has been made possible with support from MSS Performance in Chelmsford, Essex. The Kawasaki motorsport specialists will look after Kevin’s motorcycle between events, saving transport costs and giving the small Kerry team the additional benefit technical advice from a racing preparation specialist firm.
“After Kevin was knocked off the bike in pitlane in Snetterton he unfortunately had to retire the bike after SIX laps and WHILE running in 17th position. well inside his top 20 target,” added Mark. “There was extensive damage to the electric components and with uncertainty if the bike could be repaired in time, MSS Colchester offered their services to have the bike ready for Kevin for the Silverstone round.”
