SB Race Engineering is the first company outside of Australia to have a BT62, and is currently doing R&D for Brabham in regards to developing it into a race car rather than a track day toy. It will be racing the car in the GT cup Championship and are treating the season as a development one. The only car that has been in the UK prior to this was Brabham’s own car, which they ran over here.
Stuart Bitmead, Director explains more: “The 2020 race season didn’t quite plan for many, Including us at SBR, due to the global epidemic. Due to these circumstances the new Brabham BT62 that SBR were going to campaign for its owner, Paul Bailey, was not ready for the start of the season. The team were hoping to use the car after the first round of Britcar. We hope to have the BT62 out for the Spa Francorchamps non championship round.
This Brabham BT62 did manage to attend a couple of track events in 2020 for the owner to drive and familiarises himself with what is a very different car to his previous race cars. We started work on the car in January of 2021 to prepare it for the 2021 GT Cup championship where the owner will drive with Ross Wylie again. The pair managed a GTC class win in 2020. The car will be competing in the GTO class, as it is not a homologated racing car. Its immense power to weight ratio, and aerodynamics far superior to current GT3 specification cars!
As the Brabham was designed as the ultimate track day car, and is! This did mean that for racing purposes therefore some changes needed to be made. We are currently going through these and will be testing the car when restrictions are lifted.
SBR is excited to be involved with the Brabham project and keen to see how it fairs against the GT cup field!”
