Another successful and points-rich race weekend for T Sport Bernau’s Antonio Albacete at Zolder!
Last weekend, the team travelled from our temporary base at garage Lunau in Germany to compete at the Belgium Truck Grand Prix at Circuit Zolder. As always, the team was well prepared and excited try and improve our trucks performance further, as well as welcoming a couple of our team partners at the circuit.
The weather conditions looked as though they could be a bit challenging when the team first arrived on Wednesday evening. Luckily the track remained dry for the majority of the weekends action.
The official programme began with 2 promising testing sessions on Friday afternoon. Saturday started with a very strong performance comprising of a convincing podium finish in race 1 and a great attempt at a second podium in race 2.
After comfortably progressing into the super pole session Antonio qualified in 4th position for race 1. A fantastic start to the race followed by some excellent racing saw Antonio move up one position, crossing the finish line in 3rd place. The reverse grid saw Antonio starting race 2 in 5th position. In the race Antonio managed to move up the order and was challenging for a second podium finish. After a long battle Antonio made one of the best overtaking manoeuvres we have seen for a very long time. Unfortunately, Antonio ran out of tarmac on the exit of the corner just dipping a wheel onto the wet grass which caused a loss of traction and ultimately lost 4 places dropping back to 8th place. However, after a great recovery and another overtake Antonio brought the truck home in 7th position.
There was no reason for the team to be disappointed as the lap times were consistent and we could see that we were very competitive going into Sunday’s races.
The truck returned to the paddock without any major damage and valuable points were collected for the overall standings.
Sunday’s results were pretty similar with Antonio qualifying in 4th position once again. Another well-earned 3rd position podium finish came in the first race of the day. In the final race the reverse grid caused Antonio to get caught up in a lot of traffic, not helped by another driver in front that locked the wheels at the first corner. After a long race in the traffic Antonio brought the truck home in 9th position.
It was a real pleasure for us all to welcome our main partners in the paddock at such a successful race weekend.
We are currently in a really strong 4th position in the overall championship standings and what we should not forget to mention is that we also compete in the team championship together with Norbert Kiss. We are very proud to currently occupy a very strong 1st place in the team standings.
We will continue to keep pushing and hope that the next race at Le Mans in two week’s time will just be as successful!
