Major Irish Championships set for the off at Mondello Park
The second race meeting of the season at Mondello Park will see a number of the major Irish championships kick off their year. Having missed out on the season opener in March the brand new Patch Fiesta ST Championship will get underway this Sunday, April 17th, along with the Tool Dynamics Supercar Championship, Avon Tryes Formula Sheane and Seat Supercup Ireland.
Run by the Irish Motor Racing Club the eighteen race programme will make for an extremely busy days racing which will be broadcast live on Mondello. TV on Sunday afternoon
Building on the success of the Mondello Park Fiesta Championship the new series for more powerful Fiesta ST cars is eagerly anticipated as the series prepares for its début on Sunday. With a mixture of Fiesta Championship graduates and more experienced racers form other classes, the patch Fiesta ST Championship should prove just as hard fought as its sister series. The championship will benefit from the support of market leading Tyre Trade suppliers ‘Patch Tyre Equipment’ who played such a big part in the launch and growth of the original Fiesta series.
Two championships moving strongly into their second year are the Tool Dynamics Supercars and the Seat Supercup Ireland. The two championships are very different, but both series feature close and competitive fields due to the tightly controlled regulations.
The rear wheel drive Supercars made a fantastic comeback in 2015 as the ASK Supercar championship using cars from the hugely popular RT2000 championship along with less powerful T-Cars based on the same Sonny Howard space frame chassis. The success of the 2015 championship sees the series grow for this year with upwards of fifteen cars expected for round one and more to follow later in the year.
The Seat Supercup Ireland began slowly running with the ITCC at the beginning of 2015 but by the end of the year there were enough of the high tech Seat racers to have their own separate race. For 2016 steady growth will see a dozen cars take to the grid initially with a high quality driver line-up that features multiple championship and race winners.
The single seater action on Sunday will come from the Avon Formula Sheane Championship and BOSS Ireland. The Irish built Formula Sheane cars have seen steady growth in the last couple of seasons and with all of the top runners returning for another year the usual action packed racing can be expected. The seasonal début for the BOSS Ireland Series is also pencilled in for Sunday and with this series its all about the sight and sound of big fast open wheelers.
Also on the programme for Sunday’s event is a rare double header for the Mick’s Garage Future Classics Championship along with two races for Strykers, Historics and Ginetta Junior Ireland.
